We Got a Grant!

We’re thrilled to share that Spirit vs. Score has been awarded an Individual Artist grant from the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. This kind of support means a lot, and honestly, it’s a reminder that the story we’re trying to tell matters beyond just the ultimate community.

The thinking right now is that the grant money will fund the screening later this year and that any proceeds we’d make from that could go right back into the community.

We’re deep in the interview phase right now, with some incredible conversations already in the can and more scheduled through the spring and summer. The Rochester ultimate community has been generous with its time and its stories, and that generosity is what’s going to make this film great.

More updates coming as production rolls on. Thanks for following along.

Welcome!

We’re excited to launch the official website for Spirit vs. Score, a documentary exploring 45 years of Rochester’s ultimate frisbee community.

This site will be your hub for production updates, interview highlights, and behind-the-scenes glimpses as we bring this story to life. We’ll be sharing progress throughout 2026 as we capture the voices and experiences that have shaped Rochester ultimate from its beginnings through today.

Where We Are Now

We’re currently in pre-production and seeking grant funding to support the project. Our first interview with GRADA founding member Dan Bell is complete, and we have many more community members lined up for interviews beginning in early 2026. These conversations will span multiple generations of players, coaches, and organizers who have been part of this community’s evolution.

We’re also actively collecting historical materials—photos, videos, team rosters, and memorabilia—to help preserve and share this history. If you have materials to contribute or want to be part of the conversation, reach out at info@spiritvsscore.com.

What’s Next

Interviews will run through spring 2026, followed by B-roll shooting throughout the year. We’ll be posting updates here as production progresses, sharing stories from the community and insights from the filmmaking process.

This documentary is being created with the community, not just about it so thank you for being part of the journey.
